What To Expect On Your First Visit
Whether you are a first timer at a chiropractics office or just looking for a new doctor every experience can be different! Here at Psota Chiropractic Care this is what you can expect on your first visit:
Typically a first visit will last from anywhere between 45 minutes to an hour. This time frame includes the time it take to fill out an intake form and discuss any insurance needs with our office manager. Next, in the treatment room, we will take a detailed history and find out how we can help you. This may include, depending on each individual’s history, a postural analysis, orthopedic examination, and/or neurological examination.
Following the detailed consultation, the specific treatment plan will be explained so one can understand the extent of their care and any questions can be answered before the treatment starts.
Treatment once again is individualized to the needs of one’s condition. This may include cold/hot packs, Electronic Muscle Stimulation (EMS), Cold Laser therapy, Traction, soft tissue therapy/stretch, and/or adjustments.
All follow up appointments will typically range from 15-30 minutes.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is Chiropractic?
Chiropractic is a safe and non-invasive form of alternative health care for pain management and spinal health. Chiropractic care focuses on the body’s ability to heal itself, known as innate healing. Specific and various adjustments are used to manipulate the spine and correct “subluxations”. Subluxations are areas in the spine that are misplaced or disrupted, which can be due to daily life activities, tight muscles pulling on the spine, degeneration, etc. These subluxations may cause discomfort and pain, as well as cause the joint to function less optimally. Chiropractic care uses adjustments that are specific to these areas where joint function is limited to improve function, decrease muscle tension, and improve nerve health.
Overall, the goal of chiropractic care is to use manual therapy along with spinal manipulation to reach the root of ones condition, restore mobility and function of the joint, and allow the body to heal itself.
Will I have to keep coming back for treatment?
A lot of the time we hear the rumor that once you start going to a chiropractor you have to go for life. That is not necessarily the case. With chiropractic care majority of the time it may take 4-8 visits before someone starts to notice a major difference in their condition. Chiropractic care is treating the root of the problem rather than masking the symptoms. Chiropractic involves one’s body to heal from the inside out in order to prevent symptoms from returning/occurring in general. Treatment plans vary case by case including the amount of time one has to come in for care.
Typically, it will take 6-8 weeks before a treatment plan is completed. After this a wellness/maintenance plan is recommended. It is like going to the dentist every 6 months to prevent diseases and conditions involving the gums and teeth. There are multitude of studies that show preventative health care, which is care before symptoms arise, can prevent chronic conditions from occurring.
So in short, yes, we do recommend you keep coming back in for care after you are no longer in pain, however only sporadically. Why? There are three phases of care: Pain relief, Rehabilitation, and Maintenance. The pain is gone, the condition has been stabilized, but now let’s keep your spine happy and healthy. Coming in once every 3-4 weeks can help prevent new or recurring injuries, improve spinal and nerve health, and slows down the bodies natural degeneration process.
Why should children see a chiropractor?
Children typically are not complaining of back pain, so why should one seek chiropractic care for a child? Even as an infant chiropractic care can be beneficial! Think of how traumatic child birth can be, not only for the mother but baby as well. The baby is pushed, twisted, and pulled which can be very intense, even for a few moments. Conditions that chiropractic care can help with in little ones include:
Ear infections
Torticollis
Colic and Reflux
Asthma
Nocturnal Enuresis (bed wetting)
Constipation
Adjusting little ones is not the typical adjustment an average adult patient gets. The technique is very gentle and a much slower approach. Babies typically do not have to see chiropractors as often due to their ability to heal much quicker!
